About this bibliography
The De Simone Formulation has been studied in human and laboratory research since the late 1990s. Studies published before 2016 generally refer to the formulation by the brand name it was sold under at the time, and titles below are reproduced exactly as published. In a correction notice amended in January 2024, the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation confirmed that until 2016 the De Simone Formulation was sold as VSL#3® and that after 2016 the VSL#3® product no longer contains it (ECCO correction notice). A January 2026 correction in the United European Gastroenterology Journal states that the De Simone Formulation is available in Europe under the brand name CDS22-formula (UEG Journal correction).

This list is partial and is updated as new studies are published. No clinical trial has been conducted under the product name CDS22-formula. Research relates to the formulation as studied in each paper. It is not a claim that CDS22-formula treats, prevents or cures any condition.
How to read this bibliography
1. Clinical guideline recognition
The American Gastroenterological Association's 2024 clinical practice guideline on pouchitis (Barnes et al., Gastroenterology 2024;166(1):59-85, PMID 38128971) identifies the De Simone Formulation by name as the probiotic used in the trials it reviewed. That recommendation is conditional, based on low-certainty evidence, and applies to a defined clinical setting. Neither the AGA nor ECCO endorses any retail product.
2. Clinical versus experimental
Clinical studies were carried out in people. Experimental studies were carried out in cells, tissue or animals and describe mechanisms rather than outcomes in patients. The two are listed separately in every section so they are not confused.
3. Trial dose is not a retail serving
Doses used in the clinical studies were administered under medical supervision in defined patient groups, in several cases at levels well above a retail serving. A trial protocol is not a serving suggestion. CFU is a specification, not a measure of effect.
