Do Probiotics Need to Be Refrigerated? The Cold Chain, Explained for the UK
Refrigerated probiotics raise the same three questions from almost everyone who buys one online. Why does it need to be cold? What happens if it warms up? And will it survive a courier? This guide answers all three for CDS22-formula, using the manufacturer's own storage leaflet and the published research on live bacteria stability. It is a logistics guide, not a health guide.
CDS22-formula is an 8-strain live bacteria food supplement manufactured by EOS2021 S.r.l. in Italy and sold in the UK as a food supplement under UK food law. It is not a medicine and no authorised health claim is made for it. The manufacturer's leaflet says to store it in the fridge at +2°C to +8°C for an 18-month shelf life, and that it can be kept at room temperature up to 25°C for up to one week without loss of quality. Probiotic.co.uk holds it refrigerated in Chorley, Lancashire, packs it with Easi-Chill coolant packs in a foil-lined insulated box, and dispatches Monday to Thursday only by Royal Mail Tracked 24 or DPD Premium Tracked. If the ice pack has melted on arrival, the product is inside the 7-day window and is fine to refrigerate and use. Neither the packaging nor the delivery is a claim about health effects; both are about temperature.
- Anyone buying a refrigerated probiotic online in the UK for the first time and wondering whether it survives the post
- Existing CDS22-formula customers whose parcel arrived with a soft ice pack
- Anyone comparing refrigerated and shelf-stable products and unsure which label claim to trust
Cold chain definition: A cold chain is an unbroken sequence of refrigerated storage and transport that keeps a temperature-sensitive product, such as a live bacteria supplement, within its specified temperature range from the factory to the end user.
A refrigerated probiotic is a live bacteria food supplement whose label directs storage at fridge temperature, typically +2°C to +8°C, to hold the live count stated on the pack through to the best-before date. In the UK it is sold as a food supplement under food law enforced by the Food Standards Agency and local trading standards.[7] It is not a medicine and is not licensed by the MHRA. CDS22-formula is a refrigerated probiotic, but the manufacturer's leaflet also allows up to 7 days at room temperature up to 25°C, which is what makes tracked courier delivery workable.[4] It is available from Probiotic.co.uk as 450 billion CFU sachets and 112 billion CFU capsules, both shipped cold-chain across the UK.
- What it is: an 8-strain live bacteria food supplement, 450 billion CFU per sachet
- Manufacturer: EOS2021 S.r.l., Italy
- Storage on the leaflet: refrigerate at +2°C to +8°C
- Shelf life refrigerated: 18 months from manufacture
- Room temperature allowance on the leaflet: up to one week at up to 25°C
- Do not: expose to temperatures above 25°C, or freeze
- UK stock location: refrigerated, Chorley, Lancashire
- Packaging: Easi-Chill gel coolant packs plus foil-lined insulated box, rated for up to 73 hours of chilled protection
- Dispatch days: Monday to Thursday, Thursday 1pm cut-off
- Carrier: Royal Mail Tracked 24 or DPD Premium Tracked
- Is it a medicine? No. Food supplement under UK food law.
- UK VAT on food supplements: 20%
- It is not a claim that the product does anything for your health. It is a claim about temperature.
- It is not required for a 24 to 48 hour delivery. The 7-day leaflet allowance covers that on its own.
- It is not a guarantee of next-day delivery. Royal Mail Tracked 24 and DPD Premium aim for next working day but do not guarantee it.
- It is not the same as "shelf-stable". CDS22-formula is a refrigerated product with a short room-temperature allowance, not an ambient product.
- It is not undone by a melted ice pack. The ice pack is a buffer, not the thing keeping the product viable.
What is well-supported: Freeze-dried bacteria lose viability faster at higher storage temperatures, and refrigeration slows the loss (Fredua-Agyeman, Heliyon, 2024; Fenster et al., Microorganisms, 2019).
What is not proven: None of the studies cited here tested CDS22-formula itself. The 7-day and 18-month figures for CDS22-formula come from the manufacturer's leaflet, not from an independent published study.
Most relevant conditions: +2°C to +8°C for the full shelf life; up to 25°C for up to 7 days per the leaflet.
Key limit: The leaflet says to avoid temperatures above 25°C. That is the line the dispatch rules are built around.
| Feature | Specification | Evidence level |

Why does a probiotic need to be chilled?
A probiotic only counts as a probiotic if the bacteria are alive, in an adequate amount, at the point you take it. That is the working definition from the ISAPP expert consensus led by Colin Hill (University College Cork), published in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2014 (PMID 24912386).[1] Dead bacteria are not a probiotic. So the whole job of storage is keeping the live count on the label true until the best-before date.
The bacteria in a sachet are freeze-dried. Freeze-drying puts them into a dormant state with very low water content. In that state they are stable, but not indefinitely, and the rate at which they lose viability rises with temperature. Fenster and colleagues (DuPont Nutrition, Microorganisms, 2019, PMID 30884906) describe this as the central manufacturing challenge: delivering the required dose at the end of shelf life, not just at the factory gate.[2]
Cold slows the loss. A 2024 study by Fredua-Agyeman (Heliyon, PMID 38560212) tracked freeze-dried Lactobacillus acidophilus over six months at 4°C and 25°C and found storage temperature and protectant choice both changed how many cells survived.[3] Refrigeration is not a marketing preference. It is the condition under which the manufacturer has validated an 18-month shelf life for CDS22-formula.
Refrigerated vs shelf-stable probiotics
Both types exist, and neither is automatically better. What differs is the formulation, the strains, and the shelf-life claim the manufacturer has validated.[2]
| Feature | Refrigerated probiotic (e.g. CDS22-formula) | Shelf-stable probiotic |
|---|---|---|
| Storage on label | +2°C to +8°C | Room temperature, usually below 25°C |
| Shelf-life basis | Live count validated under refrigeration | Live count validated at ambient |
| Room-temperature allowance | Short. CDS22-formula: up to 7 days at up to 25°C | Whole shelf life |
| Typical CFU per serving | Can be very high. CDS22-formula: 450 billion | Usually lower |
| Shipping | Cold-chain packaging, limited dispatch days | Standard post |
| What to check | Label CFU applies "at best-before if refrigerated" | Label CFU applies "at best-before at ambient" |
The honest way to read a label is to look for the phrase near the strain list. CDS22-formula's states that the live cell count applies when the product is correctly stored, in intact packaging, at +2°C to +8°C, until the best-before date.[6] That is the condition the 450 billion figure is tied to.
How can CDS22-formula be shelf-stable for 7 days?
The 7-day figure is not ours. It is printed in the manufacturer's storage leaflet inside every box, and reproduced word for word on our delivery information page.[4] The leaflet says:
- Store in the refrigerator to maintain the vitality and potency of the bacteria until expiration.
- You can store the product outside the refrigerator at room temperature (up to 25°C) for up to a week without compromising its quality.
- Avoid high temperatures (above 25°C).
- To be consumed preferably within the time indicated on the package.
Two things make that possible. First, the bacteria are freeze-dried, so at moderate temperature the viability loss over a few days is small relative to the 18-month curve. Second, the pack is sealed against moisture, and moisture, not just heat, is what wakes dormant cells up and shortens their life.[2]
The practical meaning: a courier journey of one or two days at UK room temperature sits well inside the window the manufacturer has validated. The cold-chain packaging we add is a margin of safety on top of that, not the thing making delivery possible.
The cold chain: Italy to Chorley to your fridge
CDS22-formula is manufactured by EOS2021 S.r.l. in Italy and is refrigerated from the point of manufacture. It travels to the UK by refrigerated road freight, so it is not exposed to ambient temperature in transit between the factory and our warehouse.
At our fulfilment facility in Chorley, Lancashire, stock is held in dedicated refrigeration, not on an ambient shelf. When an order comes in, the pack is taken from the fridge and packed on the day it ships.[4] The formulation history of CDS22-formula, and how it relates to the De Simone Formulation in the research literature, is covered in our formulation history guide.
Steps 1 to 4 are a continuous cold chain. Step 5 is where the product is at ambient for a period, buffered by the coolant packs and covered by the 7-day leaflet allowance.
What is in the box: Easi-Chill packs and the 73-hour rating
Every CDS22-formula order ships in a foil-lined insulated box with frozen Easi-Chill gel coolant packs. Easi-Chill is made by Icertech in Wrexham. The packs are pre-filled gel coolants that the supplier rates as non-toxic and food-safe, designed to hold contents below 8°C when used with an insulated box.[5] Our packaging configuration is rated for up to 73 hours of chilled protection in transit.[4]
73 hours is a rating for the packaging system, not a promise for every parcel. Real performance depends on the ambient temperature the parcel sees, how many packs are in the box, and how long it sits in a van or on a doorstep. Treat it as the design ceiling.
What this means in practice is that on a standard one to two day delivery, the box is usually still cold on arrival. When it is not, section 7 applies.
A 24 to 48 hour delivery is inside the leaflet's 7-day allowance with or without coolant. The Easi-Chill packs exist to keep the product closer to fridge temperature for as much of the journey as possible, which is the more cautious option. They are a margin, not a dependency.
When we ship and when we hold: the Monday to Thursday rule and the 25°C rule
Monday to Thursday only
We dispatch CDS22-formula Monday to Thursday. Orders placed after 1pm on Thursday ship the following Monday.[4] The reason is simple: a parcel dispatched on Friday can sit in a depot over the weekend, and that is the one scenario that eats into the 7-day window for no benefit. Same-day dispatch applies to orders received before the daily cut-off.
| Order placed | Ships | Aims to arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, before cut-off | Monday | Tuesday |
| Wednesday, before cut-off | Wednesday | Thursday |
| Thursday, before 1pm | Thursday | Friday |
| Thursday after 1pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday | Monday | Tuesday |
"Aims to" is deliberate. Royal Mail Tracked 24 and DPD Premium are next-working-day services, not guaranteed ones. We do not promise next-day delivery.
The 25°C rule
The manufacturer's leaflet says to avoid temperatures above 25°C.[4] So we check the weather forecast before dispatch. When forecast temperatures are above 25°C, we hold dispatch and monitor the forecast rather than send a refrigerated product into a hot van. If the Met Office issues a weather warning, affected customers are told about the revised dispatch date.
In a typical UK year this affects a handful of days in summer. It costs us sales on those days. It is still the right call, because a parcel that spends a day above 25°C is outside the conditions the manufacturer has validated.
Tracked 24 and DPD Premium are service levels, not guarantees. Weekend holds, weather holds, and carrier delays can all add a day or more. Every one of those scenarios is still inside the 7-day leaflet allowance, which is the point of the allowance.
The ice pack has melted. Now what?
Refrigerate the product straight away and use it as normal.
A melted ice pack means the coolant has done its job and run out, not that the product has failed. Per the manufacturer's leaflet, CDS22-formula tolerates up to 7 days at room temperature up to 25°C without loss of quality.[4] A standard UK delivery is one to two days. Even a delayed delivery of three or four days is inside the window.
The checks worth doing on arrival:
- Is the box intact and the sachets sealed? If yes, refrigerate.
- Was the parcel delayed beyond 7 days from dispatch? Check the tracking. If so, contact us before using it.
- Was the parcel left somewhere hot, for example a sunlit porch in a heatwave? Contact us with the tracking details and we will look into it.
What you do not need to do is throw it away because the gel pack is soft. That is the most common support question we get, and the answer is always the same: the pack is a buffer, the leaflet allowance is the safeguard.
Storing probiotics at home
Once it arrives, treat CDS22-formula like a chilled food:
- Put it in the fridge, +2°C to +8°C, as soon as it arrives.
- Keep it in its original box. The sachets are the moisture barrier; do not decant.
- Do not freeze it. The leaflet does not permit freezing, and freeze-thaw cycles are a recognised cause of viability loss in freeze-dried cultures.[2]
- Avoid the fridge door if you can. The door is the warmest and most variable zone.
- Left out overnight? Put it back in the fridge. One night at room temperature is a fraction of the 7-day allowance.
- Travelling? A few days out of the fridge below 25°C is within the leaflet. A week in a hot climate is not.
- Mix a sachet into a cool, non-fizzy drink or yogurt and take immediately. Do not add to hot liquids, as heat reduces the live count.[6]
Best-before dates: do probiotics expire?
Yes, in the sense that matters. A probiotic does not become unsafe on the best-before date the way fresh meat does, but the live count declines over time and the best-before date is the point to which the manufacturer has validated the count on the label under refrigerated storage.[2] After that date the pack still contains bacteria, but you can no longer rely on the stated 450 billion.
CDS22-formula has an 18-month shelf life from manufacture when refrigerated.[6] The best-before date is printed on every box. Because we hold refrigerated stock and turn it over continuously, we ship the freshest stock we have.
Two practical rules: buy what you will use within the date, and keep it in the fridge the whole time. Those two things, more than anything else, determine whether the count on the label is the count you get.
What the evidence does and does not show
Hill et al., 2014. The ISAPP expert panel reinforced the FAO/WHO definition and clarified that the term probiotic applies to live microorganisms delivered in adequate amounts. Viability at the point of use is a defining requirement, which is the basis for storage and cold-chain practice.
Hill C, et al. Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2014;11(8):506-514. PMID 24912386.Fenster et al., 2019. A DuPont Nutrition review of probiotic production and formulation. Key points for storage: stability to end of shelf life is the central challenge; dry supplement formats can be validated for refrigerated or ambient storage depending on strain, process and packaging; moisture and temperature are the main drivers of viability loss.
Fenster K, et al. Microorganisms. 2019;7(3):83. PMID 30884906. PMC6463069.Fredua-Agyeman, 2024. Freeze-dried Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 was stored for six months at 4°C and 25°C with different protectants. Survival depended on both storage temperature and protectant. This supports the general principle that temperature matters, but it is one strain in a laboratory matrix, not a multi-strain commercial sachet.
Fredua-Agyeman M. Heliyon. 2024;10(7):e28407. PMID 38560212. PMC10981131.None of the above tested CDS22-formula. The 18-month refrigerated shelf life and the 7-day room-temperature allowance for CDS22-formula come from the manufacturer's leaflet and label, which reflect the manufacturer's own stability data. No independent published stability study of CDS22-formula under UK courier conditions exists. The published research supports the general principles; the product-specific figures rest on the manufacturer.
Refrigerated probiotics in the UK: where to buy
Very few UK online retailers ship live bacteria supplements cold-chain, because it costs more, restricts dispatch days and requires refrigerated storage rather than a warehouse shelf. The questions to ask any seller of a refrigerated probiotic are the ones this guide has answered: where is the stock held, what is it packed with, which days do they dispatch, and what does the manufacturer's leaflet actually say about room temperature.
In the UK, live bacteria supplements are sold as food supplements under food law enforced by the Food Standards Agency and local authority trading standards.[7] They are not medicines and are not licensed by the MHRA. Food supplements carry 20% VAT in the UK.
CDS22-formula is available in the UK from Probiotic.co.uk, appointed by the manufacturer EOS2021 S.r.l. as the authorised distributor for the United Kingdom and Ireland. Every order is refrigerated in Chorley, packed with Easi-Chill coolant in an insulated box, dispatched Monday to Thursday, and tracked to the door, including Northern Ireland. UK dispatch means no import duty or customs handling charges. The CDS22-formula Probiotic 450 billion sachets are the highest-count format; the 112 billion capsules use the same eight strains in capsule form.
Product details on this page, including live count (450 billion CFU per 4.4g sachet), pack size (12 sachets), manufacturer (EOS2021 S.r.l., Italy), strain identification (NCIMB 30435 to 30442), storage instructions and shelf life, were verified by Probiotic.co.uk against the current product listing and the manufacturer's leaflet extract on 23 September 2026. Prices are shown on the product page. Product details should always be checked against the current label before use, as specifications and pricing may change.
The research discussed in this article relates to how freeze-dried bacteria survive storage and transport. It should not be read as a claim that CDS22-formula produces any effect on health. This product is a food supplement, not a medicine. No authorised UK or EU health claim is made for CDS22-formula on this page or on the product.

FAQs: probiotic storage and cold chain delivery UK
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated?
It depends on the product. Refrigerated probiotics such as CDS22-formula have their live count validated at +2°C to +8°C, and the label directs fridge storage. Shelf-stable probiotics are formulated and validated to hold their count at room temperature. Neither type is automatically better; read the storage instruction on the pack and follow it, because that is the condition the CFU figure is tied to.
Why do some probiotics need refrigeration and others not?
Freeze-dried bacteria are dormant but lose viability over time, and the loss speeds up as temperature rises. Whether a product needs a fridge depends on the strains, the drying and protectant process, the packaging, and the shelf life the manufacturer has validated. Fenster et al. (Microorganisms, 2019, PMID 30884906) describe delivering the labelled dose at the end of shelf life as the core formulation challenge; refrigeration is one way to meet it, ambient-stable formulation is another.
Are refrigerated probiotics better than shelf-stable ones?
Not as a rule. Refrigeration is a storage condition, not a quality grade. What matters is whether the live count on the label is validated to the best-before date under the stated storage conditions. Some very high-count products, including CDS22-formula at 450 billion CFU per sachet, are formulated for refrigerated storage, but a well-made shelf-stable product that meets its label at ambient is equally legitimate.
How long can probiotics be out of the fridge?
Check the manufacturer's leaflet, because the allowance is product-specific. For CDS22-formula, the leaflet states it can be kept outside the refrigerator at room temperature up to 25°C for up to a week without compromising its quality, and that temperatures above 25°C should be avoided. Other products may allow more or less.
I left my probiotics out of the fridge overnight. Are they still ok?
For CDS22-formula, yes. One night at room temperature below 25°C is a small fraction of the 7-day allowance in the manufacturer's leaflet. Return the product to the fridge and continue as normal. If it was left somewhere hot, above 25°C, for an extended period, contact the retailer.
What happens if probiotics are not refrigerated?
The bacteria do not die instantly, but the live count declines faster than it would in the fridge, so by the best-before date the pack may no longer contain the number stated on the label. A study of freeze-dried Lactobacillus acidophilus stored at 25°C versus 4°C over six months found storage temperature changed survival (Fredua-Agyeman, Heliyon, 2024, PMID 38560212). Short periods within the manufacturer's stated allowance are fine; long-term ambient storage of a refrigerated product is not.
How long do probiotics last in the fridge?
Until the best-before date on the pack, provided the packaging is intact and the product has been kept at the stated temperature. CDS22-formula has an 18-month shelf life from manufacture when refrigerated at +2°C to +8°C. The best-before date is printed on every box.
Can you take probiotics after the best-before date?
The best-before date is the point to which the manufacturer has validated the live count under correct storage. After it, the product is not unsafe in the way perishable food is, but the stated CFU can no longer be relied on. The practical advice is to use it before the date and store it in the fridge throughout.
How is CDS22-formula delivered in the UK?
Probiotic.co.uk holds CDS22-formula refrigerated at its fulfilment facility in Chorley, Lancashire. Orders are packed from the fridge into a foil-lined insulated box with frozen Easi-Chill coolant packs and dispatched Monday to Thursday only, with a Thursday 1pm cut-off, by Royal Mail Tracked 24 or DPD Premium Tracked. Both services aim for next working day but are not guaranteed. Delivery covers the whole UK including Northern Ireland.
What should I do if the cool packs have melted on arrival?
Refrigerate the product straight away and use it as normal. A melted coolant pack means the packaging has done its job and run out, not that the product has failed. CDS22-formula is stable for up to 7 days at room temperature up to 25°C per the manufacturer's leaflet, and a normal UK delivery is one to two days. If tracking shows the parcel was delayed beyond 7 days from dispatch, or it was left somewhere hot, contact Probiotic.co.uk with the tracking details before using it.
Do you ship in hot weather?
Not when the forecast is above 25°C. The manufacturer's leaflet says to avoid temperatures above 25°C, so Probiotic.co.uk checks the weather forecast before dispatch and holds orders on those days rather than send a refrigerated product into a hot van. If the Met Office issues a weather warning, affected customers are told about the revised dispatch date. This typically affects a few days each summer.
